Sister Mary Pauline McDermott, RDC (Barbara McDermott) a Sister of the Divine Compassion, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2021 after a long illness.

Sr. Mary Pauline was born on October 5, 1924 in New York, the daughter of Joseph and Margaret McDermott. Sister attended St. Joseph Mountain School in Monticello, New York and graduated from Good Counsel High School in 1942. Sister went on to graduate from Good Counsel College with a BA degree. She also received a Master’s degree in Math from New Paltz State University. Sister’s teaching career began at St. Frances de Chantal school in the Bronx and her work continued at Sacred Heart in Hartsdale, St. Mary’s in Katonah, Our Lady of Sorrows in White Plains, Good Counsel Academy, White Plains and St. Anthony’s in West Harrison. Prior to her retirement Sr. Pauline worked at Pace University. In her retirement years Sister could often be found tutoring youngsters in math or mastering her use of computers. Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said, “Sister Pauline was a faithful, caring and loving member of our community. She gave her heart and soul to her students and friends. May she rest in peace.”

Sr. Mary Pauline is survived by her Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her nephew, Brian Shadish, and her nieces, Liz Shadish and Maggie Garcia and many cousins and friends. Sister was predeceased by her sister, Mary Jane Cartmell along with numerous cousins. 

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated on Friday, October 8 at the Chapel of the Divine Compassion. Prior to the funeral, there was a wake at the Chapel with a welcoming prayer. Burial followed the liturgy at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
