Sr. Mary Christopher O’Toole, RDC, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, died peacefully on June 18, 2011 at Good Counsel Convent in White Plains.

Sister Christopher was born in New York on February 25, 1923 the daughter of Michael and Emily (Farrell) O’Toole. She entered the Sisters of the Divine Compassion on February 4, 1943 and professed her final vows on August 15, 1948.

Sr. Christopher attended Good Counsel College and graduated with a degree in Mathematics. She continued her studies at the Catholic University in Washington in Math and received an advanced degree in 1965. Sister also received NYS permanent certification in Math and certification in School Administration.

Sr. Christopher began her teaching career at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School, Elmsford. She also served at Preston High School and St. Mary’s High school as Assistant Principal and Math teacher. When Kennedy Catholic in Somers, NY was opened, Sister became by turns a Math teacher, Academic Dean and Principal.

Sister Susan Merritt, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion commented, “Sister Mary Christopher was a gifted and beloved mathematics teacher to thousands of students over the years, and while she also served generously as dean and principal, teaching math was what she liked to do best.”

Sister Christopher is survived by her Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her brother, Walter, her nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers.
