Sister Mary Alberta Barry, RDC, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, a former principal of the Academy of Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in White Plains, died on March 20, 2002 at Good Counsel Convent. Sister Mary Alberta was 87. She was born June 8, 1914 in Staten Island, New York, the daughter of Joseph N. and Mary McIntyre Barry. Sr. Mary Alberta entered the Divine Compassion congregation on August 15, 1932. She received a B.A. degree in Mathematics from Good Counsel College and continued her studies at Fordham University for an M.A. degree in Mathematics.

Sister did additional graduate work at New York University, the University of Maine and Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa. Sister Mary Alberta began her elementary school teaching career at St. Bernard's in White Plains from 1935 to 1942 and was appointed to Good Counsel Academy High School as a mathematics teacher and later principal from 1942 to 1967. From 1967 to 1970 she served as Assistant Principal of John F. Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers, New York and continued to teach math in this new role.

From 1970 to 1983 Sister M. Alberta joined the faculty of Preston High School, Bronx, New York teaching mathematics and assisting in the Finance Office. In 1983 Sr. M. Alberta served the Senior Citizen program at St. John the Baptist parish in Yonkers and the following year assisted in the Registrar's Office of Pace University in White Plains. Until her retirement Sister served as Treasurer of Good Counsel Academy Elementary School. Sister Alice Feeley, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said "We remember Sr. Mary Alberta Barry as a woman of kind and gentle strength whose long and effective ministry in secondary education ensured her students of a high quality of academic achievement and a firm grounding in compassion. Sister Mary Alberta is survived by her religious Sisters of the Divine Compassion and her nephew, Robert Barry of Shirley, New York.
