Sr. Marie Murphy, RDC (formerly known as Sr. Mary de Chantal), a Sister of the Divine Compassion, died peacefully on April 13, 2020.

Sr. Marie was born in the Bronx in 1933, the daughter of John and Mary (Fegan) Murphy.  She attended St. Frances de Chantal Elementary School, Bronx, NY and St. Jean Baptiste High School, New York, New York. Sister received her BA from Good Counsel College in White Plains and her MA from St. Joseph’s College.  

Sister spent many years in education, beginning at St. Mary’s School in Katonah. She also served at St. Joseph’s in Croton Falls, St. Lawrence O’Toole in Brewster, NY., Good Counsel Academy High School and completed her teaching career at Kennedy Catholic in Somers.

Sister Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion said, “Having borne the transition from independence to dependence with grace and acceptance, Sr. Marie was a true example for all. She was a gracious woman, and often used her Irish wit to brighten the spirits of all she came in contact with.”

Sister is survived by her Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her cousins Tom and Joan McCann and family and PJ Conway and family. Also surviving are cousins living in Ireland, Ann Murphy, Eleanor O’Keeffee, Marian Walshe, Kathleen and Owen Donaghy and family.
