Sr. Margareta McKenna, RDC

Sister Mary Margareta McKenna, RDC (Anne McKenna), a Sister of the Divine Compassion, passed away peacefully on September 20 after a long illness.

Sr. Margareta was born in Bronxville, New York in 1930 the daughter of John and Margaret (Hanfling) McKenna. Sister attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School in Scarsdale and St. Gabriel’s High School in New Rochelle. Sister graduated from Hunter College and received her BA in Physical Education. She also received her MA in Supervision and Administration from Fairfield University.

Sister’s teaching career began at Mt. Carmel School in Elmsford. She also taught at St. Anthony’s School in West Harrison and served as Principal there for many years. Sister also served as Principal at Good Counsel Elementary School and for many years she was the Administrator for the Good Counsel campus and moderator of the Guild of Our Lady of Good Counsel.

Sr. Laura Donovan, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said, “An athlete in her early years, Sr. Mary Margareta was a kind and generous friend and likewise, a generous member of the RDC Community and mission.”

Sr. Margareta is survived by her Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her brother, John McKenna and many nieces and nephews. Sister Margareta was predeceased by her three sisters, Sr. Margaret Concepta, SC, Mrs. Marie Fallon and Marian McKenna.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Chapel of the Divine Compassion, 52 North Broadway, White Plains, NY.  Prior to the funeral there was a wake in the Chapel beginning at 9:00 with a welcoming prayer. Burial followed the liturgy at Calvary Cemetery.
