The Sisters of the Divine Compassion decry the unilateral use of lethal force enacted by the U.S. government in Syria this week. We mourn the deaths of the Syrians killed during the missile strikes as well as the many Syrian people who suffered and died during the chemical weapons attacks by the Syrian forces.
With Pope Francis, we are appalled at the “unacceptable massacre” caused by Syria’s use of deadly chemical weapons. However, military force has not reined in Syrian President Assad in the past; there is no reason to believe that a missile strike will stop his further devastation of the Syrian people.
As Sisters of the Divine Compassion, we oppose the administration’s escalation of the years of violence the Syrian people have endured and call for multinational non-military action to end the crisis in Syria.
