For as long as John F. Kennedy Catholic High School existed, the shrine to Our Lady of Lourdes stood just inside its gates. For just as long, so too did Sr. Barbara Heil (formerly known as Sr. de Lourdes Marie) faithfully teach and guide countless JFK students, that is, until her untimely death in a head-on collision last year. The staff and students paid special tribute to Sr. Barbara this week. Our Lady’s shrine has been expanded to a grotto, its lovely plaza graced by a carved granite plaque honoring the memory of Sr. Barbara, Kennedy’s beloved teacher and mentor. Cardinal Timothy Dolan blessed the grotto, and led the assembled staff, students and Sisters of the Divine Compassion in prayer.
