Theresa Brady

Sister Mary Theresa Brady, RDC, a member of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion and former Professor of English at Good Cousel College and Pace University, died on February 15, 2002 at Good Counsel Convent in White Plains. Sister Mary Teresa was 79. She was born May 24, 1922 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Edward J. and Evelyn Schirmer Brady. Sr. Mary Teresa entered the Divine Compassion congregation at Good Counsel September 12, 1943 after her graduation from Good Counsel College with a BA degree summa cum laude. She continued her education at Fordham University and received the MA and PhD degrees. Appointed to the English department she served from 1954 - 1975 and at Pace University from 1975-1993. Sr. Mary Teresa did postgraduate work at Columbia and Princeton Universities, University College of Galaway, UCLA and Oxford University. Her publications are many, among them The Fruit of His Compassion, the definitive history of Mother Mary Veronica and the foundation of the Divine Compassion congregation. Articles by Sr. Mary Teresa are found in Traditio, Speculum and other publications. Sister Mary Teresa served for 13 years as a member of the General Council of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, an officer of the National Council and Alphi Chi, and a member of the Society of Fellows of Dyson College, Pace University. Sr. Alice Feeley, President of the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, said "We have known and loved Sr. Mary Teresa Brady as deeply spiritual and faithful sister as well as a brilliant scholar who very naturally drew her students into an energetic love of learning. Among her many and singular contributions to our religious community are the research, editing and writing which have made the history and foundational heritage of the Divine Compassion available and alive to our members and all who are part of our mission. Sr. Mary Teresa's dedicated work will continue to inform and touch comtemporary and future audiences." Sr. Mary Teresa is survived by the Sisters of the Divine Compassion, her sister, Sr.Mary Virginia Brady, RDC, the Director of Pastoral Care, St. Agnes Hospital, White Plains and predeceased by her brother, Edward. Visitation was at Good Counsel Convent, 52 North Broadway, White Plains, NY on Sunday and Monday from 2:00 - 5:00 and 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 am in the Convent Chapel. Internment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. The McMahon, Lyon and Hartnett Funeral Home in White Plains handled the arrangements.
